AB15 Painting your house exterior

If you are a landlord and are thinking of painting your house then it is vital that you get Landlords insurance to protect your house from any damage.

Painting the outside of your home can be a little daunting and in fact it really is a major job. However if you are lucky you might just get away with some maintenance which will spruce up your house paintwork and so reduce the number of times you need to repaint the whole house. Whether you are able to get away with repainting the worst bits, or if you really do need to repaint it all, the following guidelines apply.

Timing the job is important. The best time for external painting is late spring or early summer and early autumn. You should avoid the hot summer months and the cold and wet ones. Both will ruin your hard work and investment.

Preparation is very important and before you start to paint you will need to ensure that the surface you are painting on is in good condition. If the previous paintwork is peeling, this will be because either the paint was applied on damp wood (or moisture has entered the wood subsequently) or it was applied on a greasy or glossy surface. You should remove all flaking paint with a wire brush followed by sanding smooth any sharp edges. If any bare wood shows though then this needs to be primed.
Blistering is another affect of moisture. Any blisters should be removed by scraping and the areas treated as above.

Crinkled paintwork is often caused by applying a second coat before the first one is properly dry. It can also occur if the painting was done in cold weather. If you come across this you will need to scrape off all the paint and prime the bare wood.

Sometimes you might come across chalking paint. Certain paints will form a chalky surface which is a mechanism to keep them looking good, but excessive chalking can occur. You will need to remove as much of the paint as possible and over-paint with a non-chalking paint.

Mould and mildew are frequent visitors and occur where there is a combination of shade and moisture. You will need to remove as much as you can be washing and then treat the area with fungicide followed by over-painting with a fungicidal paint.

Creating a Great Rustic Home

Setting the right feel for your house is very important, as you want to create somewhere that is comfortable and suited to your own personal style. Many people opt to go for a slightly rustic ambience characterised by worn down floors, old furniture and dark and comfortable rooms. Luckily with the help of floor sander hire and appropriate furniture you can make this change.

The key to a rustic looking home is floors and walls that show their age – this doesn’t mean that they should be in a poor state, rather you just want them to be a bit worn down. The best way to do this is to hire a floor sander and apply it to your hardwood floors – this combined with a rustic lacquer will completely change the way they look. Be warned though, this change is irreversible so make sure you are happy with a rustic look before cracking out the sander. You can complement this by applying thick white paint to your walls and leaving any wooden beams exposed.

Furniture is another key element to making a rustic environment. The key here is to focus on materials that evoke an old feel – worn down wood and wrought iron work particularly well. Your first buy should be a large wooden dinner table which can serve as the centrepiece of your kitchen, pick up matching chairs and squishy leather couches to complete the pictures. When you start decorating your bedrooms you can focus on wrought iron, especially when it comes to bedframes.

It is also worth investing in a few knick knacks to complete the rustic feel – don’t buy these new as you can easily pick them up at a second hand store for a fraction of the price. Old lanterns, pictures and bookshelves will all help lend a rustic feel. Best of all, some of these items might even be useful: old iron kettles for instance can still be used. Of course you don’t want to go overboard with this kind of thing, as if you buy too many your house will start to resemble a cheesy chain restaurant.

Giving your home a rustic feel takes a significant investment of time and money yet it may well be worth the effort – the appeal of this style is that it creates areas which are very comfortable: your friends and family will have no problem relaxing in your rustic abode.

The 7 Deadly Interior Design Mistakes

If you want to avoid the same mistakes so many homeowners do over and over when they are either renovating or redesigning their houses, then employing a well respected home interior decorator will go a long way to solving that problem.

After all, when you are sick, you go see a doctor. When you have a legal issue, you hire an attorney. Hopefully, you do not do your taxes yourself, but engage a sharp accountant. So, exactly why should be redecorating your home be any different? It shouldn’t if you want the best results possible.

A few of the areas of the home where novice homeowners make most of their mistakes will be discussed below. These are often overlooked because they seem minor when compared to everything else you are doing. But, if they do not come out beautifully, and match the rest of your home, they can and do ruin your entire home’s look and feel.

Let’s start with the interior blinds, since in most instances these are an afterthought when everything else has been completed. First, most people forget about them completely, and end up running out of money before they are ordered. Second, when this happens they still try and fit them in, and obtain a very cheap set that mess up all the good work than has been done so far.

If you find yourself in this situation, just put off purchasing them for a while until you can afford it. Then when you are able to buy them, make sure you get something that matches everything else you have done, and does not look cheap.

The next thing we will discuss will be the sliding doors interior part of a home. Once again, the same problem often occurs here as we mentioned above. If this happens to you, please be sure to follow the exact same recommendations as we discussed earlier.

If you plan on using any interior signs for whatever reason, please make sure they are tasteful and placed accordingly throughout the home. Nothing looks worse than a poorly made sign.

Of course, if you had followed the advice provided in the first paragraph of this short article, which was to hire a highly experienced home interior decorator you would never be confronted with any of these issues in the first place. But if you do happen to end up with problems with any of the following interior blinds, home interior decorators, or interior signs please be sure to follow the advice we have already provided.
